AS DEB HAALAND’S NOMINATION CLEARS COMMITTEE,

EDDY ARAGON REMAINS ONLY REPUBLICAN RUNNING

ALBUQUERQUE, NM, Feb. 24, 2021 – Today, As Deb Haaland’s nomination for U.S. Secretary of the Interior cleared the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Albuquerque talk show host Eddy Aragon remained the only Republican candidate to have filed with the Federal Elections Commission to fill New Mexico’s first congressional district seat.

“I’m the only Republican who can legally raise money,” Aragon said. “We have a campaign staff in place and a website, eddyaragon.com, taking donations and volunteers. I am the only Republican ready for this very fast race, which – because the House is almost evenly split between parties – will draw a lot of national money.”

New Mexico election law states that once a congressional vacancy is created – as will happen when Haaland is confirmed by the full Senate, and resigns her seat in the U.S. House – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has 10 days to call a special election, which must be held within 77 to 91 days. That places the likely special election date at around June 1.

Among Democrats running for the seat, as of Dec. 31, 2020, Randi McGinn has raised $214,888, Melanie Stansbury has raised $53,385, and Antoinette Sedillo-Lopez has raised $66,763.

Aragon, popularly known as “The Rock of Talk,” is owner and host of Albuquerque radio station KIVA (ABQ.FM / 1600 AM / www.rockoftalk.com).
