EDDY ARAGON CALLS ABQ CRIME WAVE
A FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP AND CARING
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, Feb. 12, 2021 – Eddy Aragon, candidate to replace Deb Haaland to represent New Mexico’s first congressional district, today called Albuquerque’s record-breaking homicide statistics “a massive failure of leadership, betraying a lack of care for our people.”
Aragon made the statement after four Albuquerque residents were killed in less than 36 hours. No one is in custody for the four killings.
“The first responsibility of any city, state or federal government is the protection of its citizens,” Aragon said. “Albuquerque’s gang killings have gone on for so long, and grown so widespread, this problem is bigger than government incompetence – it’s government apathy.”
On his show “The Rock of Talk” (KIVA (ABQ.FM / 1600 AM / www.rockoftalk.com), Aragon airs a daily segment called “Murder Mike” that features a live police scanner, because of the low level of tracking and reporting Albuquerque crime.
“Police officers are not to blame for Albuquerque’s crime problem,” Aragon said. “The blame lies with failed leadership in APD, failed leadership from Mayor Keller, and failed leadership from Governor Lujan-Grisham.”
Aragon added that Albuquerque news media have “tended to accept the failed state of our city,” but that they are beginning to recognize the magnitude of the problem.
